The shortage of lead in the global market

There is a shortage of 10 thousand tons of lead in the world lead market in the first quarter of 2014 (International Lead and Zinc Study Group). The volume of lead production in the first three months of this year is 2.621 million tons, while consumption is 2.631 million tons.

Negative dynamics of reducing the world's lead compounded mass is due to the closing of companies in some regions of China, primarily in Shandong, Jiangsu , Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.

China is the world leader in the production of refined lead , which accounts for about 50 % of the world's metal. The European Union and the United States are divided between the second and third places . Some Asian countries  such as Japan, South Korea and India , also produce significant amounts of lead.

Electric batteries take approximately 80% of global lead consumption.

Experts predict that the decline in production on increased demand could lead to an increase in lead prices to 2500 dollars per ton by mid-2015 .

World Market lacks 41.000 tons of lead

From January till November 2013 lead deficit of $ 41 thousand tons was observed in the global market according to International Lead and Zinc Study Group.

The year before, the excess metal in the amount of 70 thousand tons was registered. According to expert estimates, the global lead production reached 9.751 million tons, while consumption - 9.792 million tons for over 11 months of last year.

Earlier, BNP Paribas analysts said that lead prices will increase to 2500 usd. / Ton to the end of 2014 and will continue to grow. In addition, experts believe that the demand for the metal will increase by 5% this year. In 2015, the demand growth in will be 5% also.

"We expect a slight excess of the metal in 2014, but supply constraints will shift the market in serious deficit afterwards. Increase of lead production is required, though lead is usually a byproduct of metal production and other raw materials, and many companies try toavoid it not to have environmental concerns, "- said the expert.
